A Substantial Carriage Clock with a Decorative Dial

rare French carriage clock with painted porcelain dial

A large and highly unusual carriage clock; the eight-day duration movement has a platform lever escapement and strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong, with a repeat button set to the top to sound the last hour at will.

The backplate is stamped to the lower corner with the serial number 1941.

The painted porcelain dial has a matt-gilt ground and is decorated with a scene depicting an impressive chateau standing beside a lake on which is moored a small boat and has a white chapter ring with black Roman numerals behind which branches and leaves from a tree are shown allowing the dial centre to be a part of the scene.

The whole design of the substantial gilded Anglaise case, including the handle, resembles a series of blocks.
