Fine Antique Clocks

An interesting enamelled Cannalée cased carriage clock; the eight-day duration movement has a platform lever escapement and strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong, with push-button repeat at will to the top. The backplate is stamped with the letter B in a circle, a mark associated with carriage clocks made in Saint-Nicolas-d’Aliermont and seen on pieces from the Delépine-Canchy and Baveux workshops, who worked closely together through their family connections.

The champlevé enamelled dial is decorated with a floral design in various colours on a blue ground and has white Roman numerals on a gilded chapter ring and white spade hands.

The Cannalée case has further champlevé panels to the sides and, unusually, to the top, all with further floral decoration and interestingly set with stylised dolphins. It is surmounted by a five-bail handle as more commonly used on Gorge cases. It has been noted that the trademark of a B within a circle may be that of Brunelot of Paris, but my research suggests that this is quite probably incorrect.

Leigh Extence notes: I am currently undertaking extensive research into the carriage clocks and history of the Delépine-Canchy business, who took over that of Pons in the mid-1840s and latterly became Delépine-Barrois, and who had a family connection with the Baveux clockmaking workshops situated a few yards away across the road in the town of Saint-Nicolas-d’Aliermont, with both being major suppliers to Henri Jacot individually and in collaboration.
