John Eldridge, Alresford: A Hook-and-Spike Wall Clock
1272 dial.jpg

An early-to-mid-18th century hook-and-spike wall clock. The thirty-hour duration bird-cage movement has an anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell mounted to the top with an outside countwheel mounted on the backplate. The steel work has the interesting additional decoration of a snake head engraved to the hammer stop.

The eleven-inch square brass dial has a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman hour numerals, fleur-de-lys half-hour markings and signed either side of VI o'clock with the maker's name Jno. Eldridge, Alresford. There is fine matting to the dial centre and cast-brass crown-and-cherub spandrels to the four corners with a single blued steel hand.

With long pendulum and cast weight.
