A small steeple-shaped library clock by this well-known Edinburgh maker.

The eight-day, single-fusee movement has an anchor escapement whilst the shaped silvered dial has black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and is engraved in scroll with the makers name Bryson, Edinburgh.

The mahogany case has brass inset to the inset panel to the base, a steeple top with side finials, glazed sides and stands on bun feet.

Robert Bryson Sr. is first recorded as a clockmaker at The Mint, High Street, Edinburgh in 1808 being admitted as a burgess of the 1814 and made a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammerman in 1815 the year he moved to 5 South Bridge. He then moved to no.6 and by 1840 was at 66 Princes Street. An excellent chronometer maker, he received a Royal Appointment to Queen Victoria.

He worked alongside his sons including Robert Jr., born 1820, with whom he became a partner. Robert Jr. is known to have been an outstanding citizen, becoming Master of the Merchant Company in 1874.

Robert Sr. died in August 1852 and Robert Jr. died in 1886 when the business was passed on to the well-known Edinburgh company Hamilton & Inches.
