A lovely porcelain panelled carriage clock, having panels to all three sides plus the dial, the turquoise ground decorated with coloured birds and flowers with inset scenes depicting sea and landscapes. The eight day movement strikes the hours and half hours on a gong with push button repeat and is stamped on the frontplate with the trademark of the clockmaker, Soldano (J.S. within an oval), which is repeated to the underside of the platform along with the name Soldano. The movement is stamped with the serial number '9656' which is repeated to the panels and case and scratched to the underside of the escapement.
The gilded Anglaise case has beaded moulding to the top and bottom and a fluted centre to the handle. It is a particularly rare feature to find not only the side panels and dial decorated but also the rear door.
Joseph Soldano was known as a maker of fine carriage clocks having been awarded medals at the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 & 1878 where it was noted that '...the exhibition of this establishment showed substantial progress in the art of case decoration. On show were a group of carriage clocks ornamented with great taste and originality. The escapements appeared to us to have been treated with particular care." They are particularly well known for the high quality of their escapements which where in all probability made in Geneva, Switzerland and were stamped, as this one is, with the 'J.S.' trademark. The well known firm of Dent's were regular customers of Soldano's during the 1860's.
