Plahto, Birmingham


A mahogany wall clock of lovely colour having an eight day fusee movement with a half dead beat escapement, five spoke wheelwork and shouldered plates. The round, 12 inch convex dial has black Roman hour numerals, blued steel spade hands and is signed by the maker 'Plahto, Birmingham'. The dial is connected to the movement using a falseplate. The case has an octagonal surround on which sits the fine cast brass bezel with a silvered sight ring, below which is the trunk with shaped glazed aperture through which is visible the pendulum bob, and which has a gilded cast brass surround. To either side of the trunk are carved ears.

L. Plahto is recorded as working in Birmingham circa 1850 with a mahogany wheel barometer known signed by him.
