An attractive mahogany chamfer top bracket clock, the case has brass trim to the canted corners and fishscale frets to the sides with, unusually, lignum vitae drop handles above, with the chamfer top surmounted by a turned lignum vitae finial sitting atop a well executed stepped plinth and all standing on turned bun feet. The round, eight-inch painted convex dial has black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands, is signed by the maker Wymark, London' and has a 'strike/silent' lever above XII o'clock. The eight-day, five pillar, double fusee movement has an anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell, with a pull-cord repeat.
Mark Wymark is recorded as having been apprenticed to Thomas Dean, a watchmaker of Radcliffe Row, London, on the 21st Jan 1806 for 7 years from his 14th birthday, giving him a year of birth of circa 1792. He is known to have been working from 1816 until 1842 with his address given as 5, Percival Street with a second address at no. 49 from 1838. The business became known as Wymark & Son from 1844 until 1869 recorded at this latter address which may previously been that of his clockmaker son. As well as a clockmaker, Wymark was also known as a watch finisher.
