A relatively small rosewood mantel clock with the eight day fusee movement having shaped plates and finely turned pillars. The shaped, arched silvered dial is engraved with black Roman numerals and the maker's name 'Daniel Desbois, London' along with engraved engine-turned decoration to the centre and has blued steel moon hands. The steeple shaped mahogany case stands on a stepped base with an inset, brass bound panel and stands on brass ball feet, with acorn finials to the top.
Daniel Desbois came from a Hugenot family and set up as a clockmaker in circa 1785 having been apprenticed to John Johnson of 9, Grays Inn Passage, London and who he succeeded in 1799. He died in 1848, aged 75 and was succeeded by his son, also Daniel, with whom he had been in partnership from 1836. Daniel Desbois jnr continued at this address, and then 79, High Holborn, until his own death aged 76 whereupon the business was continued by his own son, Edwin, until 1917. The well-known partnership of Desbois & Wheeler are recorded as working at the Grays Inn address from 1805 until 1835.
