William Simpson, Kennington (London)

A chamfer topped mahogany bracket clock that typifies all that is best in classic Regency design with the case having brass & ebony inlay to the lower front panel, brass inlay to the inset corner panels and further brass trim to the canted corners. To the sides are fishscale frets with gilded shell handles above with the chamfer top surmounted by a gilded acorn finial sitting atop a small well executed plinth. All standing on typical ball feet. The eight-day, double fusee movement strikes the hours on a bell with a pull repeat. The round eight-inch convex dial has black Roman numerals, blued steel ‘moon’ hands and is signed by the maker ‘W. Simpson, Kennington'. Height: 19 inches

William Simpson is recorded as first working in London in the late 18th century having been made a Freeman of the Clockmaker’s Company in 1781, before continuing into the early-to-mid 1800’s.
