Richard Grove, London


A fine Chinese Chippendale style English cartel clock, the eight day fusee movement has the original verge escapement with the plates shaped at the lower part to take the barrel, the carved gilt wood case is in wonderful condition retaining as it does the original water gilding, with Chippendale style decoration and surmounted by a Ho-Ho bird. The round silvered dial has a 'false pendulum' aperture and is engraved with black Roman numerals, outer Arabic minutes and the maker's name 'Rich. Grove, London'. The hands are of decorative blued steel.


* Richard Grove, of Wood Street, London, was a fine maker having been apprenticed on the 3rd of July, 1749 to Thomas Nourse of London for 7 years at the sum of £10/-/-. He was the son of George Grove of St. Mary, Whitechapel, an officer in the excise and he became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers on the 14th of January 1760. Amongst those apprenticed to him was the well-known maker Richard Hooper in June 1760. Grove died in 1817.
