Matt & Co, Cardiff

An eight day mahogany longcase clock striking the hours on a bell, the movement has shaped plates and large turned pillars. The 13 inch painted arched dial has seascapes depicting lighthouses to the four corners and a well painted seascape to the arch, with a seconds dial, date aperture, decorative brass hands, black Roman numerals and signed 'Matt & Co., Cardiff'. The inside of the case has a label signed and dated 'Mssrs Matt & Co., 17 Trinity Street, Cardiff, 1863' which was quite possibly put there by the casemaker. The mahogany case is of a lovely colour and typical of the Bristol/South Wales area with wavy moulding to the hood door, rope twist columns to the trunk and door, a crested moulding to the hood and various inlaid herring bone and straight stringing. There are various panels of flame mahogany veneer to the trunk and base.

Matthew Matt is recorded as working at 17, Trinity Street, Cardiff from 1861 until 1871 so the label in the case is most certainly that put on by the casemaker to tell him who he has to deliver it to.
