
A round dial wall clock with an eight day timepiece fusee movement, the 11 inch dial signed 'Griffith, Mile End Rd, London'. With blued steel spade hands and a cast brass bezel, contained in a round mahogany case. Interestingly at the bottom of the dial, hidden behind the silvered sight ring, the maker has signed in ink the date '16 Sept 1856' obviously the date of manufacture.
William Griffith is recorded as working at 1, Ireland Row, Mile End, London from 1826 until at least 1832 becoming '& Son' in circa 1835. His son John Widlake Griffith is recorded as working at 15, Wentworth Place, Mile End Road, London from circa 1840 until 1864 when he moved to 97, Mile End Road until 1875. At some point circa 1871 he opened a second outlet at 113, Burdett Road East.
