A small mahogany drop dial wall clock, the eight day chain fusee movement has an anchor esacapement and is signed on the backplate 'J W Benson, Ludgate Hill, London 11351'. The 7½" dial is painted with black Roman numerals and a repeat of the maker's name 'J W Benson, Ludgate Hill, London'
* J W Benson was a well known clock and watch maker who is recorded as working in the mid to late Victorian period. The company made many high class clocks and watches for both retail, the railway companies and City workers.
A wonderful history, along with an illustration of a similair clock, can be seen in 'James W Benson of Ludgate Hill' by Chris McKay and Mike Bundock, as well as in Victorian Clocks by Richard Good.
It is unusual to see this 'script' signature on a wall clock, it was Benson's 'trade-mark' at this time.
Another similair clock by Benson is illustrated in 'English Dial Clocks' by Ron Rose, albeit one with a 12 inch dial.
Height: 13½ inches. Dial: 7½ inches.
