Joseph Cetti, London



A Sheraton style mahogany wheel barometer inlaid with shell patterns to either side of the bottom of the thermometer and further round inlay to the top and bottom of the trunk. The case has a pediment top with a brass finial and edging of boxwood and ebony. The 8 inch silvered dial has engraving to the centre and the maker's name ‘Cetti & Co, 84 Red Lion Strt, Holbn, London’ with a blued steel hand and brass pointer which is operated by a brass knob through the glass. With a heavy cast brass bezel typical of this type of barometer.


There were somewhere in the region of 17 members of the Cetti family working as barometer makers in the south of the country with a dozen or so in London the most well known being Joseph.

Joseph Cetti & Co are recorded as working at 54 Red Lion Street from 1803 until 1815 before moving to number 25 until 1839 dating this barometer to the former dates. They had originally worked for a year at 3 Long Lane, Smithfield. Joseph was succeeded by John Cetti at the latter address.
