* Francois-Arsene Margaine was one of the best and most famous of the carriage clock makers of the mid to late Victorian period, recorded as working at Rue Beranger 22 and Rue Bondy 54, Paris and he advertised regularly in the Revue Chronometrique and was one of Japy Freres best customers for roulant blancs. They were awarded the Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and a Gold Medal in 1900.

* William Payne was a well known maker & retailer, recorded as working at 163, New Bond Street, London from 1825 until the beginning of the 1900's when the company took over No. 165, now the premises of Asprey & Garrard, where they not only made clocks but also retailed them including items by the famous maker and designer Thomas Cole. Payne often used movements made by the maker Samuel B. Gaze as did Cole. They would've had their carriage clocks made in the workshops of Margaine for them to retail in both the London and Paris showrooms.
